The Cape of Good Hope SPCA, alongside the City of Cape Town Law Enforcement Animal Control Unit, raided a property in Ottery on Wednesday armed with a warrant issued by the Wynberg Magistrates Court, exposing a dogfighting ring.
Five dogs were seized, two of whom were covered with scars as a result of dog fighting. According to the SPCA, among them, a dog and a young puppy were found with freshly cropped ears, which is also criminal in terms of the Animals Protection Act – and evidence of the illegal operation.
“The gruesome scene painted a damning picture – a blood-soaked carpet, and the walls of a makeshift fighting pit smeared with the tell-tale blood stains of suffering.”
SPCA Inspectors reportedly also confiscated a treadmill, break-stick, medication, and other paraphernalia often associated with the savage blood sport of dog fighting. The pit itself has been collapsed and seized as evidence, with forensic testing now required to strengthen our case against those responsible.
The SPCA says it has pledged to cover the costs of the critical DNA testing at a private laboratory, which is needed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“Dogfighting is not just an act of cruelty—it is a criminal enterprise, one that thrives in the shadows and feeds on the suffering of the voiceless. Today’s bust is a victory, but the war against dogfighting is far from over. We need YOUR help to fight back.”
