President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that South Africans will go to the polls on 29 May 2024, for the General National and Provincial elections.

This after meeting with the Independent Electoral Commission, and all 9 Provincial Premiers on 20 February, to discuss the state of readiness for the General elections.

As the 2024 elections coincide with South Africa’s celebration of 30 years of freedom and democracy, Ramaphosa has called on all eligible voters to fully participate.

“Beyond the fulfilment of our constitutional obligation, these upcoming elections are also a celebration of our democratic journey and a determination of the future that we all desire. I call on all South Africans to exercise their democratic right to vote and for those who will be campaigning to do so peacefully, within the full observance of the law. We also urge unregistered voters to use the online registration platform to register”, said President Ramaphosa.

The proclamation to declare the date will be issued in due course. This leaves a very small window for prospective voters to still register to vote, as once the date is proclaimed in the Government Gazette, the voters roll will close.

The IEC held two very successful weekend voter registration drives in the last few months, adding over two million people to the voter’s roll.

Following the final registration weekend on 3 and 4 February, the voters roll in the Western Cape swelled to 3 269 644 people.
