Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson has expressed strong support for President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent commitments during the State of the Nation Address (SONA) to turn South Africa into a “construction site,” a move aimed at revitalizing the country’s infrastructure and driving economic growth.
The announcement aligns with the ongoing efforts led by Minister Macpherson and the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) to attract significant infrastructure investment, enhance construction activities, and revitalize small harbours to foster local economic development.
Among the key initiatives highlighted by President Ramaphosa, Macpherson emphasized the government’s focus on raising at least R100 billion in private-sector infrastructure investment over the next four years. This funding will support the expansion of key projects across the country, with the aim of creating jobs and stimulating growth.
“We welcome the President’s support for our department’s work,” said Macpherson. “It will help us continue our efforts to secure vital infrastructure financing and expand the scope of projects that contribute directly to economic activity and job creation.”
Another pivotal project is revitalizing small harbours, such as Hout Bay harbour. These harbours will be refurbished to boost economic activity in coastal communities. These efforts are designed to unlock new opportunities for local businesses and create jobs in the maritime sector.
Additionally, the President reiterated the importance of accelerating Strategic Integrated Projects (SIPs). Currently, 82 projects, valued at R437 billion, are under construction in sectors including transport, energy, water, and housing. With 19 projects already completed, the department is making progress on its extensive infrastructure goals.
The government also plans to improve the effectiveness of public-private partnerships (PPPs) by revising related regulations, which will allow greater private sector involvement and financing in construction projects.
This is part of a broader strategy to ensure that over R1 billion worth of infrastructure projects receive the necessary state support to be successfully executed.
Macpherson emphasized the importance of these initiatives not only in terms of infrastructure development but also in stimulating the broader economy, particularly in the face of global challenges.
“We are committed to ensuring that these projects have a tangible impact, contributing to President Ramaphosa’s goal of growing South Africa’s economy to above 3%, which will ultimately create new employment opportunities.”
Macpherson will provide further details on his Department’s progress when he delivers his reply to the SONA next week.
He reinforced the government’s commitment to a brighter, more prosperous future for South Africa, with infrastructure playing a central role in the nation’s growth and development.
