The Automobile Association (AA) says it has noted a significant reduction in the number of road collisions and fatalities this past Easter long weekend, compared to previous years.
It’s a period that has become synonymous with death and road-related injuries, as traffic volumes rise with holidaymakers travelling across the country.
The AA’s spokesperson Eleanor Mavimbela said what’s encouraging is the fact that the N1 corridor — which is known as one of the nation’s most dangerous routes — recorded no major crashes over the four-day period.
“This marks a promising step forward in the ongoing national effort to enhance road safety. While final figures are still pending, the AA believes there is already sufficient evidence to commend South African road users for contributing to what appears to be a reversal of a worrying trend,” said Mavimbela.
