Being a father is more than just being present, it is about balancing actively engaging in their children’s lives and making a positive impact on their families. This is according to Neo Mothopeng: the founder of the Daddy Awards South Africa.

The awards will highlight the positive impact that involved fathers can have on their children’s lives

Also known as the DASA, it is a new men’s movement that celebrates and encourages active fatherhood in the country. They also aim to recognise daddies who are active in their children’s lives and communities.

“Through the movement, we want to challenge the negative stereotypes and celebrate the men who are committed to being positive role models for the next generation,” says Neo. “The awards will highlight the positive impact that involved fathers can have on their children’s lives and encourage men to take an active role in their children’s upbringing.”

Daddies Doing Their Best

The Daddy Awards South Africa is reportedly the first of its kind in the country, with an intended annual ceremony. It is open to all fathers in South Africa with a number of categories open. Besides active fathers, the awards recognise those who have overcome great challenges in their lives – including incarceration and addiction – and become positive role models.

this movement is not about shaming or blaming absent fathers

Neo Mothopeng explains that the DASA are also about making a safe space for men to discuss the challenges they face as fathers. It also gives them a chance to connect with other fathers who may be experiencing the same challenges.
