Cape Town is set to welcome an addition to its retail landscape, as Sun International, in partnership with property developers Flanagan & Gerard, has announced the development of the GrandWest Mall.
The R600 million project will be located on the current GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World site, and will bring around 60 new shops and outlets to the broader Goodwood community.
General Manager of GrandWest and Regional Director, Mervyn Naidoo, confirmed that existing facilities such as Sun Parks, Sun Exhibits, and the Fort will be demolished to make way for the new mall, which will span more than 22,000 square metres in contemporary design.
“GrandWest is not just getting bigger, not better, it’s getting ginormous,” Naidoo said.
The mall, officially named GrandWest Mall, will feature an array of retail offerings including supermarkets, pharmacies, clothing outlets, speciality stores, gift shops, and coffee shops.
Plans also include direct access to the existing Magic Company amusement centre, as well as “ample safe parking” and scenic views of Table Mountain.
“It’s going to be a game changer, taking shop attainment to the next level. Watch this space, it’s going to be mega,” said Naidoo.
According to Flanagan & Gerard’s plans, the development will include 25,000m² of retail space, 2,000m² for health and fitness, and 1,000m² of office space. The partnership between Flanagan & Gerard and Sun International marks their second collaboration.
“Partnering for a second time, Flanagan & Gerard and Sun International have identified a pivotal opportunity for expansion, acknowledging the imperative need to redefine the retail landscape and cater to the evolving needs of consumers in the catchment area,” read the developers’ brochure on the project.
Construction is expected to begin in September this year, with the grand opening scheduled for March 2027.
There will be high visibility from major arterial roads, including Jakes Gerwel Drive (M7), Viking Way (M16), and Showground Avenue. The mall will have two secure access points into open-air parking.

Once operational, patrons will have three entrances directly into the centre as well as the first hour of parking for free.
