17-year-old Tyrelle Jonker was reportedly lured to his death by his killer in Seawinds on Thursday night. Jonker was a well-known soccer player in his community and recently became a father to a five-month-old baby.

It’s alleged the suspect knocked at his front door and proceeded to open fire right outside his Military Road home, where he succumbed to his wounds. The grade 11 Steenberg High School learner was residing with his mother and grandparents who made the grim discovery.

‘NO ARRESTS YET’

The motive for the brazen attack is unknown. Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi confirmed the incident, citing that no arrests have yet been made.

“Muizenberg police responded to a complaint on Thursday 06 March 2025. Upon arrival at the crime scene in Military Road at about 21:30, they found the body of a male who sustained a gunshot wound. The victim, aged 17 was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel. The unknown suspects fled the scene and they are yet to arrested. The motive for this attack is yet to be determined,” said Swartbooi.

‘PURE JEALOUSY’

His soccer club, Greenwood Athletic plans to honour him by having a moment of silence before their next soccer match Saturday at the Solo Park Sports Complex in Steenberg.
Greenwood Athletic’s Youth Chairperson Raymond Brickles told Smile 90.4 FM that he arrived at the crime scene shortly after hearing the shocking news.

“We suspect it was someone that he knew because the person came to the house and killed him right outside. He did not have enemies. It’s pure jealousy. That is what it is, jealousy, because the exact same thing happened to another one of our players as well. Niyaaz Patterson (18) was killed in 2023 in a similar manner, near Military Heights informal settlement,” said an emotional Brickles.
