Sea Point pool temporally closes ahead of summer due to sinkhole

The Sea Point swimming pool will be temporarily closed from Tuesday 17 September 2024, for critical excavation and repairs to be done after a sinkhole was found on the side of the pool.

According to the City of Cape Town, the sinkhole was caused by a collapse in the main pipe. The site has since been deemed unsafe for public use during this time. Health and safety precautions have been implemented, including signage and fencing of restricted areas.

“The City is committed to ensuring the safety of all visitors and this maintenance is essential to the proper upkeep of the facility.”

The swimming pool, which is one of the Mother City’s most popular facilities, is usually open all year long.

Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Patricia Van der Ross says the sinkhole, which was detected during a routine inspection of the facility, was created by a collapsed water line.

The entire water line must now be unearthed for a proper assessment of the damage and to determine the exact scope of work required for repairs. At this stage, the pool has to be closed due to this critical work.

“We apologise to the facility users for any inconvenience caused, and will work as speedily as possible to ensure that this amenity is up and running soon” – Van der Ross.

Van der Ross has however encouraged bathers to use the Long Street indoor swimming pool while Sea Point is closed.

Long Street’s operating hours are Monday to Sunday and public holidays, 07:00 – 19:00

Long Street Indoor Swimming Pool is reserved for use by ladies only every Tuesday from 10:00 – 14:00, or 10:00 – 13:00 during school holidays.

If a public holiday falls on a Tuesday, full public use will be permitted that day.

“While every effort will be made to minimise unnecessary delays on the Sea Point project, the Recreation and Parks Department undertakes to keep the public updated on the progress.”
