Scores of animals in need of water in the Southern Suburbs

Published on

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA is appealing for help to deal with the current water crisis experienced in Grassy Park. 500 animals including dogs, cats, horses and farm animals have been facing water shortages at the facility, since Sunday.

The organisation is also concerned about domestic animals in the area, and neighbouring suburbs.

On Sunday, the City of Cape Town informed residents of a water disruption, following a leak on Blackbird Avenue, in Parkwood. The water supply was cut off at the SPCA, at around 17h00.

HOW TO HELP?

The animal shelter said members of the public can assist by donating containers filled with water.

“Drop off water filled at home with 2 to 5-litre water containers or cooldrink bottles. Drop off at 1st Ave & First Road, Grassy Park. Send a donation to help, we have had to invest in portable water containers and other unexpected expenses to manage the crisis,” said spokesperson Belinda Abraham.

Furthermore, the organisation says water and donations will not only help it to continue its vital work in Grassy Park but will also go towards helping in the communities where animals are without water.

The City added that the leak is due to an air release valve that was vandalised. Water and Sanitation MMC, Zahid Badroodien said repairs are underway. The aim is for water to be restored by Tuesday morning.
