School in South Africa may reopen on the 4th of May for teachers and on the 6th of May for Grade 7’s and 12’s – that’s if Education minister Angie Motshekga approves the proposal.
At a virtual briefing to MPs this morning, department officials said that schools would reopen on 6 May but only grade 7s and 12s would return to the class on that day.
Schools will have to follow and implement strict measures such as daily screenings and social distancing. Where pupils and staff present symptoms, they must be isolated and tested.
There is also a Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) document that will be providing “clear direction” for what should be happening every step of the way. There will also be orientation and training of all learners, educators and support staff at the start of the re-opening of schools.
The school calendar will be adjusted accordingly to account for all the interruptions, including shortening holidays.
