South Africa’s whisky industry has earned global recognition after Three Ships Whisky Bourbon Cask was named the World’s Best Blended Whisky at the 2025 World Whiskies Awards (WWA) in London.
The prestigious competition, hosted by TheDrinksReport.com, saw the South African whisky triumph over strong contenders from whisky-producing powerhouses like Scotland, the United States, Japan, and Ireland.
Judged through a rigorous blind-tasting process by an independent panel of whisky experts, the competition evaluates whiskies based on criteria such as appearance, nose, taste, finish, balance, character, and complexity.
The judges praised the Three Ships Whisky Bourbon Cask for its distinctive flavor profile, noting “varnished oak, vanilla ice cream, milk chocolate, and smoked pineapple” on the nose, followed by “cornflake, caramel sauce, and ripe fruits” on the palate, with a finish highlighted by “spicy oak, brown sugar, and vanilla.”
Walters Uys, Lead Spirits Intrinsic at Heineken Beverages South Africa, hailed the achievement as a landmark moment for the country’s whisky industry.
“South Africa may be considered a young whisky-making nation, but this win reaffirms that world-class whisky knows no borders. This is the third time Three Ships Whisky has claimed the World’s Best title, proving our craftsmanship, resilience, and ingenuity on the global stage.”
Crafted at the James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington, just outside Cape Town, Three Ships Whisky Bourbon Cask benefits from South Africa’s warm climate, which accelerates maturation and enhances the whisky’s smoothness and complexity.
“We adhere to the same whisky-making regulations as Scotland—using only water, yeast, grain, and oak casks with a minimum maturation of three years,” Uys explained. “However, our unique climate allows us to create exceptionally smooth and flavorful whiskies, setting us apart.”
The award-winning whisky is a blend of grain and malt whiskies, distilled separately in copper pot and column stills before maturing in a mix of older and younger ex-Bourbon American oak casks. The result is a smooth, layered whisky with a lingering sweet and spicy finish.
