The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched the next phase of its nationwide recruitment drive to enlist 5,500 new police trainees from across all nine provinces.
Thousands of shortlisted applicants have been invited to undergo psychometric and integrity assessments, marking a key step in the 2025/26 intake process.
SAPS spokesperson Amanda van Wyk says the recruitment phase will also include physical fitness tests, background checks, and medical evaluations.
“It should be noted, while all young people who meet the basic requirements were invited to apply, preference will be given to those with a tertiary qualification at NQF level 6 or higher, as well as those who hold a valid driver’s licence.”
The recruitment follows an overwhelming response to the initial call for applications, with over one million submissions received, including more than 340,000 from candidates holding qualifications in policing, law, forensic investigation, and related fields.
Only 5,500 will ultimately be selected. Successful candidates are expected to begin training in 2026, although SAPS has not yet confirmed an exact start date.
Van Wyk urged applicants to remain patient, assuring that recruitment teams will communicate directly with those progressing to the next stage.
