SANParks defends safety on Table Mountain amid crime concerns

Published on

Amid rising concerns over crime on Table Mountain, South African National Parks (SANParks) has reassured the public that the landmark is safer than ever, with a significant decline in reported criminal activities.

According to SANParks spokesperson JP Louw, recent claims suggesting rampant crime in the area are not based on verified data and could create unnecessary alarm.

“Over the last year the official crime statistics has drastically decreased from 16 and 32 respectively in October and November 2023 to 6 in July 2024 and 3 in August 2024. These are objective and verifiable statistics”

Louw emphasised that SANParks’ efforts, in collaboration with the SAPS, the national Tourism Department and the City of Cape Town, have contributed significantly to these improvements. He added that spreading misinformation or relying on unverifiable statistics undermines the extensive work of law enforcement authorities.

“Considering official statistics and visitor numbers, such expressions are speculative and may cause unnecessary alarm which undermines worthy and successful efforts. Using speculative and unverifiable statistics, which are not supported by verifiable evidence and science, could lead to reckless and indefensible decision making, which SANParks cannot afford.”

SANParks is also taking steps to strengthen its safety and security measures by expanding its personnel and resources. Recent initiatives include increasing the number of rangers and implementing a recruitment plan to bolster the renowned Sea, Air, and Mountain (SEAM) team. The SEAM team, which operates alongside aerial resources and a specialised K9 unit, plays a crucial role in the park’s security.

In addition to these measures, SANParks is exploring the introduction of “vetted volunteer-based partnerships”, which will further enhance the safety infrastructure at Table Mountain. This initiative is currently under consultation, with the goal of creating a framework that integrates volunteers into the existing security network.

Louw also urged event organisers to comply with all safety regulations when hosting events in the park.

“We appeal to event organisers to ensure they are compliant with all application requirements that include ensuring necessary support services are in place to ensure safe and seamless events in the park in addition to the support we provide.”

Louw reaffirmed that SANParks remains committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all who visit the Cape Town landmark.
