SANParks announced the phased reopening of some hiking trails in the Tokai and Silvermine areas. This follows the April 2025 wildfire that scorched approximately 2,800 hectares of Table Mountain National Park.

SANParks has announced the phased reopening of some hiking trails

Which Trails Are Reopening and When?

From 1 July 2025, the following areas will be reopened to the public:

  • Silvermine Gate 2 (eastern side of Ou Kaapse Weg), including:

    • Waterfall and Kalk Bay trails

    • Echo Valley and Spes Bona Valley

    • Boyes Drive and Steenberg Plateau trails

  • Upper Tokai will also reopen, except for Level 4 & 5 trails, which remain closed due to unstable terrain and ongoing safety risks during the rainy season.

Still Closed: Silvermine Gate 1

Safety and Restoration Take Priority

Silvermine Gate 1, located on the western side of Ou Kaapse Weg, remains closed. This includes:

  • The popular Silvermine Dam

  • Elephant’s Eye trail

  • Silvermine Riverwalk

The organisation, South African National Parks, estimates that hiking access to this area will resume in September 2025, while the dam and river walk are projected to reopen by December 2025, depending on the completion of infrastructure repairs.

Phased trial reopening begins 1 July 2025, with safety and restoration in focus

While some trails may look unaffected, SANParks is enforcing area closures to ensure public safety and support critical ecological recovery. All visitors are urged to obey signage, closures, and ranger instructions.

Community Support and Safe Hiking Campaign

SANParks extended gratitude to the Honorary Rangers and Tokai-MTB for their role in rehabilitation efforts. A Safe Hiking Campaign will roll out in line with trail reopenings to promote responsible access. SANParks thanks the public for their patience and understanding during this recovery period.
