SA Rooibos Council has disbursed more than R12 million to local Khoi and San communities

Published on

The SA Rooibos Council says it has disbursed more than R12 million to local Khoi and San communities, as part of a benefit-sharing agreement, signed in 2019.

The agreement, between the SARC and the National Khoi and San Council, and the South African San Council, was brought to life to ensure that all parties, who trade in indigenous biological resources share financial benefits with traditional knowledge holders.

Legal Director of the SA Rooibos Council, Dawie de Villiers, says negotiations between the parties, for the Access and Benefit-sharing agreement, began as far back as 2014.
