Rural Safety Unit launched

A Rural Safety Unit (ORSU) has been launched in Hermanus, in the Overberg. This unit follows the very successful launch of the Swartland Rural Safety Unit (SRSU) during the latter part of 2022.

This is yet another intervention that is guided by the Western Cape Safety Plan whose aim, is to reduce murders by half by 2029.

Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen, will launch the much-anticipated Overstrand ORSU tomorrow.

Minister Allen said: “I am looking forward to the launch of this unit. This is another layer in our efforts to ensure greater safety in our rural communities, particularly where both human and marine life can be protected. It is also another clear demonstration of the Western Cape Government’s commitment to creating safer communities throughout the province.”

 Minister Allen will be joined by the Overstrand Executive Mayor Annelie Rabie and Deputy Executive Mayor, Lindile Ntsabo, the Executive Mayor Overberg District Sakkie Franken and various other dignitaries.

The purpose of the Pocket Guide and Leaflet:

  • The Rural Safety pocket guide provides practical guidelines to address safety issues in the agricultural sector and the broader rural community. The booklet offers practical personal safety tips, both for households and farms, as well as road safety measures.
  • The booklet is a resource aimed at providing effective communication on rural safety aspects with the ultimate goal of creating a safe, protected and sustainable agricultural environment.

  • This comprehensive booklet offers safety tips aimed at driving crime reduction in farming and agri-worker communities as well as the broader rural community.
  • Contact details of representatives responsible for rural safety are outlined in the booklet and these representatives can be contacted in case of emergencies.
  • Above all, the pocket guide is an educational tool, ensuring the sharing of key information and capacity building of agricultural stakeholders about rural safety.
