Cyclists are gearing up to partake in the Cape Town Cycle Tour on Sunday, and motorists may want to take note of the roads that their four wheels will not get access to this weekend.

There are two races scheduled to take place, the traditional 109 kilometres (which runs across central Cape Town and the Southern Suburbs), as well as a shorter 42 kilometre race.

As such, motorist and residents will be impacted by several road closures that will be put in place as of Saturday evening. The City of Cape Town says several MyCiti bus routes will be affected as well.

Major road closures include:

  • Helen Suzman Boulevard from Beach Road to Traffic Circle will be closed from 14:00 on Saturday until 21:00 on Sunday.

  • Chapman’s Peak will be closed from 18:00 on Saturday until 18:00 on Sunday.

  • Nelson Mandela Boulevard incoming from Strand Street will be closed from 19:00 on Saturday until 16:00 on Sunday.

  • M3 inbound, Hospital Bend Interchange and Nelson Mandela Boulevard will be closed on Sunday from 10:00 – 15:00

  • Victoria Rd along Camps Bay, North and South bound will be closed from 07:00 until 18:00 on Sunday.

  • M4 Main Rd through Tokai, Lakeside, False Bay to Cape Point and Scarborough will be closed on Sunday between 05:45 until 14:00.

Meanwhile, parking in Victoria Road in Camps Bay, Beach Road in Sea Point, and Darling, Strand, Adderley and Riebeek Road in the city centre will also be closed.

Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde, thanked Cape Town residents living along the routes affected by the cycle tour for their tolerance this time of the year.

“Especially those citizens whose homes get blocked, and businesses get blocked, on this one day of the year where they can’t get in and out. But they know that this is good for our city and for our province.”
