Former Deputy President David Mabuza is remembered as a patriot and freedom fighter, following his passing on Thursday. He passed away after a short illness, reportedly in his home province, Mpumalanga. He was 65.
President Cyril Ramaphosa led the nation in mourning, expressing his deep sadness and extending condolences to Mabuza’s family, colleagues, and the people of Mpumalanga.
“I offer my profound condolences to the late Deputy President’s wife, Mrs Mabuza, and the children. We are saddened today by the loss of a leader who was grounded in activism at the early stages of his political career,” said Ramaphosa.
Mabuza, affectionately known as “DD”, served as Deputy President of South Africa from 2018 to 2021. He was a prominent figure in the ruling African National Congress (ANC). He also held the role of Premier of Mpumalanga from 2009 to 2018 and served across several provincial portfolios.
He led critical initiatives including the South African National AIDS Council, Public Employment Programmes, and high-level Cabinet Committees.
“Deputy President Mabuza applied his leadership and mobilisation abilities to his role as the Leader of Government Business in Parliament,” Ramaphosa added.
Mabuza resigned from Parliament in March 2023, making room for current ANC deputy president Paul Mashatile.
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula also paid tribute, describing Mabuza as a “stalwart of our movement” and a “patriot”.
“He was a committed cadre who carried the values of unity, discipline, and transformation… We have lost a patriot, a freedom fighter, and a leader who served with humility and conviction,” said Mbalula.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Mabuza family, friends, comrades, and the people of South Africa.
May his revolutionary spirit continue to guide us as we carry forward the struggle for a better life for all.🕊️#RIPComradeDDMabuza pic.twitter.com/OYBV9JHkJp— ANC – African National Congress (@MYANC) July 3, 2025
