The payment of just over R12 million to the San and Khoi communities shows the government’s commitment to having indigenous communities benefit from the country’s rich, natural resources.
Environment Minister, Barbara Creecy, says the millions of Rand were generated through the Access and Benefit-sharing agreement, spearheaded by the SA Rooibos Council.
The agreement was signed into effect in November 2019.
Creecy says the deal will see 1.5% of the farm-gate price of Rooibos sales paid to these communities on a yearly basis.
