An assortment of drugs worth an estimated street value of R10 million has been found in Richwood near Bothasig.
On Sunday, officers reacted on intel about an apartment in Sylvia Street in De Zicht, which a local gang was allegedly using as a drug storage facility.
Police spokesperson Frederick Van Wyk said officers apprehended a man leaving the complex in a white Mercedes-Benz, whom they had been monitoring.
The suspect was questioned and searched, and in his possession, an unlicensed “9mm Tauris” firearm was found.
“He could not give an account for the firearm. The suspect was also found in possession of a key to the apartment,” said Van Wyk.
He then led officers to the apartment.
“On the way to the apartment the suspect informed members of SAPS that a lot of forensic bags will be needed.”
He noted that seven 9mm pistols, 17 different types of magazines, and 1,030 different calibre rounds were found on the premises.
“The apartment was searched and the members found black bags containing plastic wrappers. On the dining room floor several bricks of cocaine were lying wrapped in plastic. Various drugs in suitcases were found in the cupboards. In the bathroom a box was found on top of the washing machine with two 9mm pistols and ecstasy tablets. Four more firearms were found in the bedroom with 16 magazines containing rounds of ammunition. More drugs were found in the cupboards of the kitchen,” said Van Wyk.
The 29-year-old suspect was detained and is due to appear in the Goodwood Magistrates Court.
Meanwhile, Van Wyk noted that the Anti-Gang Unit will continue the investigation into the matter.
