Community members should provide the Police with more tip-offs. In this way, weapons being hidden in communities can be confiscated and communities can be kept safer. That’s the call from the Western Cape Community Police Board.
Provide the Police with more tip-offs
The comments by the Board’s Rafique Foflonker follow the discovery of an AK-47 assault rifle in Gugulethu on Monday. Along with the weapon, ammunition for it, as well as for an R1 weapon was discovered.
He has expressed his shock at the discovery of a high-calibre weapon like this in a Cape Flats community. At the same time, concern is also growing after the Mother City find.
A high-calibre weapon
Foflonker says these types of deadly weapons should not be among civilians.
People are encouraged to be more active in tipping off the Police so that weapons hidden in communities can come to light.
Meanwhile, Cape Town Police say a 39-year-old woman has been arrested for the unlawful possession of the rifle. She was taken into custody and will appear in court soon.
The AK-47, officially known as the Avtomat Kalashnikova (Wikipedia)
The AK-47, officially known as the Avtomat Kalashnikova, also known as the Kalashnikov or just AK), is an assault rifle that is chambered for the 7.62×39mm cartridge. Developed in the Soviet Union by Russian small-arms designer Mikhail Kalashnikov, it is the originating firearm of the Kalashnikov (or “AK”) family of rifles.
After more than 7 decades since its creation, the AK-47 model and its variants remain one of the most popular and widely used firearms in the world.
Design work on the AK-47 began in 1945. It was presented for official military trials in 1947, and, in 1948, the fixed-stock version was introduced into active service for selected units of the Soviet Army. In early 1949, the AK was officially accepted by the Soviet Armed Forces and used by the majority of the member states of the Warsaw Pact. (This is an excerpt from Wikipedia.)
