South Africa’s Women’s U19 cricket team has secured their place in the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup final for the first time following a commanding five-wicket victory over Australia in the semi-final on Friday, 31 January.

The Proteas showcased an exceptional all-round performance, led by Ashleigh van Wyk’s stunning four-wicket haul, which helped restrict Australia to 105/8.

South Africa chased down the target with 11 balls to spare, thanks to strong contributions from Jemma Botha (34) and Kayla Reyneke (26).

Proteas Dominate with Ball and Bat

Maintaining their unbeaten record in the tournament, South Africa now advances to Sunday’s final against India, after they beat Engeland in the second semi-final, also earlier today.

Their bowling attack, supported by sharp fielding, set the foundation for the win. Van Wyk’s 4/17 played a crucial role in keeping Australia’s scoring in check, while Nthabiseng Nini provided an early breakthrough by dismissing Ines McKeon with the first ball of the match.

Seshnie Naidu and Luyanda Nzuza contributed with key catches, helping the Proteas apply pressure. Australia’s Ella Briscoe (27*) and Caoimhe Bray (36) provided some late resistance, but their total fell short against South Africa’s formidable batting lineup.

Confident Chase Seals the Win

Chloe Ainsworth (1/19) gave Australia a glimmer of hope by bowling Simone Lourens (5) early in the innings, but Botha took control with aggressive stroke play, including a massive six, ensuring the Proteas remained in charge. Despite losing Fay Cowling (7) and Botha in quick succession, Reyneke and Karabo Meso (19) pushed South Africa close to victory.

Even after the late dismissals of Reyneke and Meso, Mieke van Voorst (8*) and Naidu (2) guided the team home comfortably, securing a historic final berth for the Proteas.

South Africa will now set their sights on claiming their first-ever ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup title in what promises to be an exciting final showdown.
