The Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA) has strongly condemned a fake video circulating online that falsely features its Director, Professor Salim Abdool Karim, spreading misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines and their side effects.
In a public statement, CAPRISA made it clear that neither the organisation nor Professor Abdool Karim have endorsed any medicines or treatments for any company.
The widely shared video, generated using deep-fake technology, has been labelled as entirely false and misleading.
Professor Abdool Karim has categorically rejected the content of the video, reiterating that COVID-19 vaccines are safe.
CAPRISA expressed concern over the potential harm such fake content can cause, especially when it appears to come from a trusted scientific figure.
The organisation has renewed its call for the public to remain vigilant against the spread of misinformation, particularly regarding health matters.
Abdool Karim has previously been the victim of fake videos, in which he is falsely portrayed as promoting certain medicines.
To help combat fake news, CAPRISA has issued the following guidelines:
- Always verify health-related claims through credible sources such as CAPRISA, the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA), the National Department of Health, or a trusted, registered healthcare provider.
- Report fake news directly to the platform on which it appears—whether on X, Facebook, TikTok, or other social media channels.
- Avoid forwarding or resharing fake news, images, or videos via messaging platforms or group chats. If you receive such content, delete it immediately.
