What was meant to be a safe precinct turned into a crime scene yesterday, when a woman was shot and killed, after walking near Wynberg Magistrates’ Court, in Cape Town, yesterday morning. The court is adjacent to the local police station.

The motive for the brazen attack is unknown. Wynberg Police detectives are still searching for the gunmen.

Provincial police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie details what happened:

“Preliminary reports reveal that the unknown deceased, was walking in the street near the court when she was approached by unknown gunmen who started shooting at her, wounding her fatally. She succumbed to injury on the scene and was declared as dead by medical personnel. The motive for the murder is part of the police probe,” says Pojie.

He has called on witnesses or anyone who may have information to come forward:

“Anyone with information is requested to call Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or to contact the Wynberg detectives”, adds Pojie.

At the same time in neighboring suburb, Constantia, authorities are investigating a mass murder. The bodies of 4 people, thought be of foreign descent, were found early yesterday. Crime scene experts spent hours on the scene looking for leads.

Police Oversight and Community Safety MEC Reagen Allen says the news of the mass killing is disheartening:

“I will engage the SAPS Provincial Commissioner General Thembisile Patekile to keep me updated on how the investigation is progressing. Those who committed this horrific crime must immediately be found, and be convicted. We have to stop all forms of killings,” says Allen.
