Milnerton High School has strongly condemned a recent bullying incident involving several of its learners, saying the behaviour does not reflect the school’s values or ethos.
This follows widespread public outrage after a video circulated online showing a group of learners verbally and physically bullying a Grade 10 pupil.
Police are investigating a case of assault, while other parents have come forward to say their children were also victims of abuse.
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) confirmed to Smile FM this morning (Precautionary suspension for learners of Milnerton HS, after assault video) that precautionary suspension letters had been issued to eight learners.
In a letter to parents, Principal Gert JP van Tonder says the school takes the matter extremely seriously.
“Bullying, intimidation, and any form of assault cannot and will not be tolerated. These behaviors are completely contrary to the values of our school community and will always be dealt with firmly and fairly.”
Van Tonder added that teaching and learning will continue as normal, despite reports of possible protest action being planned.
“We are aware of discussions on social media about protest action. Please be assured that the school is monitoring the situation closely. Should there be any safety concerns or disruptions, we will communicate with parents immediately through our official channels.”
Meanwhile, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) says the incident has caused distress among learners, many of whom are currently writing their National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams.
“Every effort is being made to ensure that all learners are able to write their exams in a calm and secure environment. The WCED remains committed to supporting the school community and ensuring that appropriate action is taken in line with departmental policies and the law.”
