Prince William’s Earthshot Prize heading to Cape Town

Published on

Prince William’s Earthshot Prize is heading to Cape Town next week, spotlighting environmental solutions with a week-long celebration of African innovation.

The event, known as Earthshot Week, will bring together influential artists, activists, athletes, and environmental advocates from around the world to Cape Town, highlighting groundbreaking efforts to protect the planet.

Hosted by South African actress and Earthshot Global Ambassador Nomzamo Mbatha, Earthshot Week will run from 4 to 7 November, culminating in the fourth-annual Earthshot Prize Awards on 6 November.

This year’s event, hosted by renowned Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award winner Billy Porter and South African media personality Bonang Matheba, will honour five winners, each receiving a £1 million prize to further their environmental initiatives.

Mbatha expressed her excitement about hosting the event, saying,

“I can’t wait to once again be part of Earthshot Week, this time as host and an Earthshot Global Ambassador. The Earthshot Prize continues to bring its message of urgent optimism to a global audience and reminds us all, especially young people, that we can be part of creating a healthier, more prosperous future for our communities.”

The awards night will showcase musical performances and appearances by global stars including Davido, Diamond Platnumz, and Uncle Waffles, as well as supermodel Heidi Klum and actor Nina Dobrev.

This star-studded lineup will be joined by Tony Award nominee Lebo M, performing with the Ndlovu Youth Choir, celebrating Africa’s creative and cultural diversity.

In line with its mission, the Earthshot Prize will highlight innovations aimed at tackling five key environmental challenges:

  • Protecting and Restoring Nature,
  • Cleaning Our Air,
  • Reviving Our Oceans,
  • Building a Waste-Free World, and
  • Fixing Our Climate.

Australian conservationist Robert Irwin, who will co-host some of Earthshot Week’s events, emphasized the importance of these solutions, stating,

“The Earthshot Prize is one of my favorite moments to celebrate these innovations every year, and I am very excited to help bring this year’s Earthshot Week to life in Cape Town.”

The awards ceremony will be broadcast across 50 markets in Africa through a partnership with MultiChoice and available for streaming globally via YouTube.

Founded by Prince William in 2020, the Earthshot Prize has honoured 60 environmental solutions to date, unlocking millions in direct and in-kind support for these initiatives.

William announced the finalists for this year’s prize last month:
