President Cyril Ramaphosa has shortlisted 4 candidates for the position of the chief justice, with the list being submitted to the Judicial Service Commission and leaders of political parties for consideration.

The candidates are justices Mbuyiseli Madlanga; Mandisa Maya; Dunstan Mlambo; and Raymond Zondo. This is the first time in South African history that 4 chief justice candidates will be interviewed by the Commission as the president usually only nominates one person.
