Angel Campey, the cheeky and witty host of ‘The JoyRide with Angel Campey’ (weekdays 4-7pm) unsurprisingly, first found her feet as a stand-up comedian. 

Having graduated with an Honours degree from UCT Film and Media in 2005, Angel worked in the Cape Town film industry for a few years.  She then took herself on an adventure to Teach English as a Foreign Language in Seoul, South Korea. (Because ‘Korea’ sounded like ‘Career,’ and she thought if she spoke fast on the phone her family would think she’d found direction!) 

The secret weapon in Angel’s origin story is her flatmate of 9 years – Siv Ngesi, well known SA actor/comedian. Thanks to Siv, thinking her tweets and blog was funny,  she started stand-up comedy in 2011 on the infamous Long Street comedy circuit, Cape Town. Angel’s quirky, quick-wit and sharp tongue quickly had her climbing the ranks as a comedian, performing at all the top clubs and festivals, with sold-out one woman shows and TV appearances on Comedy Central Africa, Dstv and SABC. 

Angel is a well known name in SA stand-up.  In 2019 she won the CTX award for the Top Female comedian in Cape Town and in 2020 she walked away with the South African Comedy Award for the Top Comedian on RADIO in South Africa (yup, that’s for us and her work on SmileFM !)

Our Angel even toured internationally performing on some of the most famous comedy stages in the world from New York City to Montreal, Canada and even around Africa with sold out shows in Lagos, Nigeria; Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania and Nairobi, Kenya.

Angel is also a multi award winning screenwriter and her satire work for Double International Emmy Nomindated ‘ZAnews-Puppet Nation’ even won her a SAFTA for best TV comedy writing in 2018.  She’s one of the writers of the hot Youtube satire show called ‘Politically Aweh’ which she won a SAFTA for best Online Content in 2022, and she’s was appointed the head writer by Riaad Moosa and Stuart Taylor for SABC2’s Comedy Mixtape season 1 which aired in 2021.

An avid gardener, Angel is the Garden Day South Africa Ambassador and a pet mom of 2 cats and a golden retriever. When she’s not talking to people for a living, she’s talking to her plants and taking her dog, Miles on adventures. 

Angel brings her extensive comedy experience to ‘The JoyRide with Angel Campey’ and alongside her team, (Eugene Mpatheni the Sports Presenter and Dean Friederich on Traffic) they aim to be authentic, funny and honest.
