The Western Cape is set to swelter under scorching temperatures on Tuesday, with authorities warning of potential health and environmental risks.
According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), hot to very hot and uncomfortable conditions are expected over the West Coast, City of Cape Town and western parts of the Cape Winelands Districts.
In some areas, “extremely hot and uncomfortable conditions are expected in the Matzikama and Bergrivier municipalities”.
Cape Town is forecast to reach 33°C, while Vredendal is expected to record the highest temperature in the province at 39°C. SAWS also cautioned that the UVB sunburn index is rated “very high”.
The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre (DRMC) echoed the warning, urging residents to take precautions.
“At this point, temperatures in the high 20s and early 30s are expected. Should the forecast hold, it can present significant health and environmental impacts,” said spokesperson Charlotte Powell
The DRMC advised the public to stay out of the sun where possible, limit strenuous outdoor activities, keep hydrated by drinking water and clear liquids, and to “take special precautions to ensure the safety of children, the elderly, animals and other vulnerable groups”.
The public is urged to report emergencies to the City’s Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700.
