Police officer gunned down in Khayelitsha

Published on

Khayelitsha police have opened a double murder case to investigate the death of two men in their mid-thirties who were gunned down in Site C on Saturday night. One of the men is reported to be a police officer stationed at the Cape Town Central police station.

Both men succumbed to gunshot wounds in hospital. The motive for these killings forms part of the investigation.

Police oversight and Community Safety MEC Reagan Allen says he is deeply saddened by the fatal shooting of the off-duty police officer. This came as the country commemorated National Police Day on Saturday.

“I expressed my sincere condolences to the family, friends, loved ones and colleagues of both victims.”

According to Allen, police are currently searching for three unknown male suspects who escaped the scene on foot.

From July to September last year, the provincial South African Police Force lost seven officers who were all off duty.

“My stance remains that an attack on any law enforcement officer, including a SAPS member, is an attack on the state as these men and women are the defenders of our country’s laws. Perpetrators, in these circumstances, should face the relevant penalties.”

Police have appealed to anyone with information to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111. All information will be dealt with confidentially.
