A shooting scene in Lavender Hill turned hostile on Thursday, 24 September 2026, with police coming under fire while responding to reports of gun violence.

Steenberg police were called to St Boniface Street in Montague Village at around 11pm.

When officers arrived, they found the street barricaded and were allegedly pelted with stones by unidentified community members.

Police spokesperson F.C. van Wyk says an unidentified group of men also fired several shots at police.

“Officers were forced to take action to disperse the crowd as the situation escalated.”

Additional resources, including Public Order Policing, the Anti-Gang Unit, Flying Squad and Operation Prosper, were brought in to secure the area.

Van Wyk says police eventually found a 47-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead at the scene.

“A murder case has been opened. The motive is believed to be gang-related.”

No police officers or other members of the public were injured.
