Theater aficionados and lovers of Shakespearean drama are eagerly anticipating the South African premiere of “Othello” at The Pam Golding Theatre within The Baxter.
This timeless classic, adapted and directed by the brilliant Lara Foot, promises to captivate audiences from April 6 to May 4, 2024, boasting a stellar cast and a team of creative geniuses.
Following its triumphant debut at the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus in September 2023, where it garnered accolades and secured Lara Foot the esteemed Gustaf Theatre Award for Outstanding Artistic Achievement, this production is set to mesmerize audiences once again.
Teaming up with an award-winning ensemble, Foot’s adaptation features Atandwa Kani in the titular role of Othello, alongside a talented cast including Albert Pretorius as Iago, Carla Smith as Desdemona, and a host of other remarkable actors.
Under the direction of Foot and with the creative prowess of Gerhard Marx (design), Kyle Shepherd (music composition), and Patrick Curtis (lighting), this rendition promises to offer a fresh perspective on Shakespeare’s classic.

According to Professor Shose Kessi, Dean of Humanities at the University of Cape Town, Foot’s adaptation offers a provocative and decolonial interpretation, inviting audiences to confront the legacies of colonial violence.
Kessi asserts that the production challenges Eurocentric readings of the colonial past while underscoring the transformative power of theater in addressing historical injustices.
