Killarney Raceway is pleased to announce the return of the Time Attack powered by MasterDrive on Saturday 20 September. It is Cape Town’s exclusive official time attack event that promises to deliver heart-stopping motorsport action.
The event welcomes an impressive array of vehicles to tackle the challenging 2.15 kilometre course. From drivers of street cars, historic vehicles, modified race cars, single seaters, sports prototypes to GT cars – all are invited to test their mettle against the clock in this unique motorsport spectacle.
The competition format sets the Time Attack apart from conventional racing. Contestants navigate the course solo, launching at 15-second intervals in a format that mirrors Formula 1 qualifying sessions.
The route runs anticlockwise, starting approximately 250 metres before Sarel’s Sweep, thundering down the Tygerberg Straight before going through Damp’s Dip, then circumnavigating Castrol Corner, going down the Joubert Straight and passing through Blockkoin Corner before finishing on the Porsche Straight.
The starting procedure adds another layer of excitement – contestants make a standing start when the flag drops, but timing only begins when they cross the timing line 10 metres ahead. This demands intense concentration and precision car control from the very first moment, with no room for warm-up laps.
MasterDrive CEO, Eugene Herbert, emphasises the event’s significance: “The Time Attack represents our commitment to providing motorsport enthusiasts with a platform to experience competitive racing in a safe, controlled environment. MasterDrive traditionally supports various motorsport initiatives by way of providing safety vehicles.
Due to this we have come to understand and work with organisations that offer such activities in a controlled environment. MasterDrive is appreciative of the opportunity to cater to motoring enthusiasts and we encourage drivers to express their enthusiasm in a safe environment such as this ensuring they are not a danger to other road users,” says Herbert.
Coastal GM at MasterDrive, Eugene ‘Gino’ Nourse, will return to the Time Attack as a driver as well competing in the vehicle that he secured a podium finish in at the recent Simola Hillclimb. “This will not be the only victorious Simola Hillclimb vehicle and driver present on the day. Keep an eye out for other team members that finished in the top three positions on the podium.
“Additionally, something exciting is planned for the day that has never been seen on a racetrack before. Be sure to watch content leading up to the Time Attack to find out more but until then we can only assure you it is not to be missed,” says Nourse.
Entry is strictly limited to 85 contestants, making this an exclusive opportunity for drivers seeking to push their limits against the clock.
The previous Time Attack saw Clinton Thorne’s winged monster Lotus 7 set the Fastest Time of the Day at 52.332 seconds. Among the top entries this year are Franco Scribante’s historic Chevron B19 and Dawie Joubert’s Lotari
(Lotus with a Ferrari engine), which has been entered with a mystery driver.
This year sees reigning Power Series Superbike champion Kewyn Snyman take up the challenge of bike versus car. Could this be the year the 50-second barrier falls? And will it be a bike or a car that does it? You’ll have to be there to find out.
The Time Attack course is designed to maximise spectator excitement. The Clubhouse balcony offers an exceptional view of the dramatic starts, while the stands along the Tygerberg Straight and at Damp’s Dip and Castrol Corner provide visibility of most of the course action.
Spectator tickets are available through Webtickets at R95 for adults, R10 for scholars under 16, and free admission for children under 12. Gate prices are R130 for adults, R20 for under-16s, with under-12s still enjoying free entry.
Killarney’s food and beverage outlets will be operational throughout the event, and spectators are welcomed to create their own trackside experience with gazebos, cooler boxes, and skottel-braais for a complete day of motorsport entertainment.
Killarney Raceway and MasterDrive look forward to another successful Time Attack event, continuing our tradition of bringing accessible, exciting motorsport to Cape Town. Don’t miss your chance to witness Cape Town’s only official Time Attack.
