An off-duty police officer has been shot and killed in front of his home in Samora Machel this morning, after returning home from the night shift.

Detectives and crime scene experts are gathering leads in Oliver Tambo Drive where the officer was shot and killed in cold blood.

At around 06:45 a 39 year old sergeant stationed at Cape Town Central returned home after a 12 hour night shift when he was attacked by armed criminals in front of his residence.

He sustained several gunshot wounds and succumbed to death on the crime scene.

The victim was not armed with his service pistol at the time of the incident and it is still unclear whether he was killed for access to a firearm.

The Western Cape police provincial commissioner, Lt Gen Thembislie Patekile expressed his sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the fallen off-duty police officer, and at the same time assured them that we will use all our resources to track and trace the suspects so that they can be brought before a court of law.

The investigation will be conducted by the Hawks and anyone who is able to shed light on the circumstances of the incident is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop anonymously on 08600 10111 or use the mobile application MySAPS.
