No water for at least 11 hours in parts of Cape Town

Published on

Major water outages, of at least 11 hours, are expected in parts of Cape Town from Tuesday.

Water supply to Morgenster Heights, Morgenster, St Michaels, Scottsville, Scottsdene, and Okavango Park in Brackenfell will be shut off on Tuesday and Wednesday between 09h00 and 19h00.

Parts of Kenwyn and Lansdowne will also be without water from 09:00 to 18:00 on Tuesday, and similar disruptions will affect areas of Bonteheuwel, Newlands, Claremont, and the Steenberg Golf Estate on Wednesday.

The Wednesday water outage in Newlands and Claremont is in preparation for the actual shut-off on 25 June.

“Residents in Talana Road, Talana Close, Bowwood Road, Sylvia Road, Middelburg Close, Alma Road, Mountain Road, Doris Road, Ethel Road, Bishopscourt Road, Zion Road, Eden Road and possibly immediate surrounds will experience no water during this period,” read the City’s statement.

Meanwhile, residents in Durbanville, Fisantekraal and Klipheuwel have been asked to reduce water consumption, as the Voëlvlei Water Treatment Plant will be shut down between 08h00 and 22h00 on Tuesday. The Voëlvlei shutdown will affect multiple municipalities, with reservoirs filled in advance.

The City of Cape Town has confirmed these outages are necessary for scheduled maintenance work as part of its Water and Sanitation Directorate’s infrastructure upgrade programme. The aim is to enhance the reliability of the water network and reduce water losses due to ageing infrastructure.

In Brackenfell, maintenance crews will be installing new pipe sections, connectors and valves at key junctions in Morgenster Heights. In Kenwyn and Lansdowne, a new control valve is being installed along Racecourse Road, affecting several local streets. Parts of Bonteheuwel will also be affected due to the completion of two new water main connections.

The City says water tankers will be dispatched as needed.

“This work forms part of the Water and Sanitation Directorate’s proactive infrastructure maintenance and upgrade programme, which ensures the future continuity of water supply by addressing the issue of unaccounted for water.”

Residents are urged to store water in advance and keep taps closed during outages. Updates will be available via the @CityofCTAlerts account on X.
