Police Minister Senzo Mchunu revealed that while DNA testing was conducted on a seven-year-old rape victim last year, no foreign DNA was found at the time, which is proving to be a major challenge in the SAPS investigation.

The little girl was allegedly sexually assaulted at her Matatiele private school in October last year. Three persons of interests, including her principal, have been implicated. He explained what the stumbling blocks in the highly-publicized case has been.

“This is a case without witnesses, it’s a case involving a minor, and it is a case where DNA, crucial as it may be, but it wouldn’t be comprehensive and get completed but it wouldn’t be comprehensive and get completed in the sense that you wouldn’t be able to compare to the necessary procedural comparisons,” Mchunu said.

Mchunu and other top police officials briefed the media this afternoon regarding its investigation into the alleged sexual assault which has gripped the nation and led to widespread protests against the scourge of gender-based violence.

Over the last week, SAPS arrested 259 rape suspects. The majority of these arrests were effected in KwaZulu-Natal.
