People can now experience the rich history and biodiversity of Robben Island, on foot, with the launch of a new Walking Tour. This is an opportunity for those who would like to walk in the footsteps of the South African heroes and legends, who were incarcerated there, many years ago. The Robben Island Museum’s Marketing & Tourism Manager, Siphuxolo Mazwi says those exploring the island on foot, and not by bus, will have access to more sites of importance. Small groups will be able to venture on foot on the island and a guide will answer questions, dispel myths and provide general information.
During the tour, visitors will visit eight historic sites:
Murray’s Bay Harbour ExhibitionVisitor Centre Complex
Land of Banishment for Xhosa Chiefs
Ou Tronk Exhibition
Blue Stone Quarry
World War II Precinct
Agricultural Precinct
Lime Stone Quarry and
Maximum Security Prison
Mazwi said: “The Walking Tours will offer tourists a new and exciting option, while also offering people who have already experienced standard tours a chance to learn more about RIM’s rich heritage.”
Here are the tariffs for the new experience:
- R 1000 for South African adults and R620 for South African children aged 2 to 18 years.
- R 1400 for non-South African adults and R 820 for non-South African children aged 2 to 18 years.
The walking tours will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The times are 07:30 – 12:00 and 13:00 – 17:00. Visitors must arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of the tour. A complimentary water bottle and cap will be provided.
Remember to wear comfortable clothing including closed shoes/ sneakers. Take along your own fruits to snack on.
All covid-19 protocols will be observed, and emergency medical services are available on site.
