With one year to go until the Netball World Cup 2023, which will be hosted right here in Cape Town, Mayor Geordin Hill Lewis says a number of legacy projects will be launched over the next few months to uplift the sport even further and get young girls interested in participating.
Hill Lewis, together with provincial and national sport leaders, has marked the 365 days before the start of the Netball World Cup, with a ceremonial unveiling of a life-size mural at the Langa Sports Complex.
The mural was painted by local artist Skumbuzo Salman who was supported by emerging artist Ayabonga Ntshongwana.
The Mayor says they will roll out several Netball activities in the lead up to the showpiece in July next year.
This includes the unveiling of several other murals in areas across the City in partnership with emerging artists from those communities.
Hill-Lewis says it’s important to create a lasting legacy for the sport. To this end, the City has partnered with the Cape Town Netball Federation to roll out an afterschool programme focused on the development of player skills.
The programme is open to girls between 1 and 16 years, and will be launched in 12 of the poorest communities.
The pilot project will run at the following City facilities and those interested in joining can sign directly at the facilities:
- Rebecca van Amsterdam Recreation Centre, Westfleur SG Atlantis
- Scottsdene Recreation Centre & SG, Kraaifontein
- Du Noon Recreation Centre
- Sarepta recreation Centre, Kuilsriver
- Nomzamo Recreation Centre, Strand
- Khayelitsha CBD Centre
- Ravensmead Recreation Centre
- Proteaville Recreation Centre, Bellville South
- Gugulethu Indoor Centre
- Portlands Indoor Centre, Mitchells Plain
- Lotus River Recreation Centre
- Ottery Centre, Coniston Park
The City is also partnering with SPAR Proteas player Phumza Maweni for the inaugural Phumza Maweni Foundation Netball tournament scheduled to take place in August 2022 at the OR Tambo Indoor Centre in Khayelitsha.
Maweni, from Khayelitsha, currently plays in the Netball Super League in the UK.
The City’s Recreation and Parks Department has also spent over R6 million in the last financial year to upgrade Netball facilities, and will spend another R2 million in the current financial year.
