Water and sewer pipes
The Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Councillor Zahid Badroodien says during January and February this year, 4 129m of water pipes and 10 311m of sewer pipes were replaced, as part of the proactive pipe replacement programme.
He added, “Cape Town is a rapidly growing city, so the rehabilitation and upgrades to our water and sanitation infrastructure are essential. To meet this objective, the Water and Sanitation Directorate has invested R863,6 million for the current financial year ending June 2024, towards City-wide water and sewer pipe replacements.”
He says the yearly maintenance programme ensures that residents continue to receive reliable water supply and sewage conveyance services via the different reticulation systems.
Yearly maintenance programme
“Various factors are considered when identifying and prioritising pipes for replacement which include a comprehensive condition assessment to identify possible capacity upgrade requirements,” Badroodien elaborated.
He said structural failures reported as service requests by the public and logged by depots are also taken into consideration.

Proactive pipe replacement programme
From the city’s side, officials have to proactively maintain, rehabilitate and replace water pipelines. This will ensure a continuous, reliable water supply to residents.
“We will continue to monitor progress as roll-out expands to new areas, to benefit both our residents and businesses in Cape Town,” he added.
He concluded that this year’s proactive pipe replacement programme is progressing well.
