Mthethwa laid to rest: Remembered for his love, lessons & activism

Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa has been remembered for his love, lessons and contributions to South Africa’s democracy, as he was laid to rest.

 

A special state funeral was held for him in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday, with President Cyril Ramaphosa presenting the eulogy.

Ramaphosa called on those mourning Mthethwa’s passing to honour his memory by ensuring the freedoms he fought for are protected.

 

“He wasn’t always the loudest or most public-facing, but he was reliable, consistent, and strategic. The lesson here is passion brings you into the struggle, but discipline keeps you in it,” is part of what Ramaphosa said in his eulogy.

Mthethwa, who died in Paris in September, is survived by his wife and six children.

 

His eldest son, Mkhululi, spoke on behalf of the children. He remembers his father as a man of “virtue, integrity, courage and brute honesty”.

 

“As your children, we know and understand that you did all you could and all that you saw fit to prepare us for the realities of this world. Perhaps the reality that brings us here today might be the one lesson we have missed.”

 

In a tribute, Mthethwa’s wife, Philisiwe Buthelezi, wrote of the love the two had shared and the sadness of his absence. Her tribute was read out on her behalf. 

 

“The universe feels empty, the air heavy with your absence. I cannot ask God why, for love this great can never be explained nor measured by time.”

 

Philisiwe’s brother, Sfiso Buthelezi, praised his brother-in-law for his mission to serve the people of South Africa, noting that Mthethwa was no longer an in-law, but a son, brother and uncle.

 

He also recalls how he and Philisiwe were “inseparable lovebirds” from the time they wed.

 

“They enjoyed the company of each other as if there was no tomorrow.”
