Anabela Rungo, the mother of former Miss South Africa (Miss SA) finalist Chidimma Adetshina, has been placed under house arrest after being granted bail by the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

She was released on R10,000 bail but faces strict bail conditions as she awaits trial.

Rungo, a Mozambican national, was arrested earlier this month for unlawfully staying in the country, after her South African identity document was revoked in September last year.

Rungo’s charge sheet consists of a total of three charges, which relate to contravening the Immigration Act and the Identification Act.

Her immigration status came under scrutiny in 2024 when questions arose regarding her daughter’s nationality during Adetshina’s participation in the Miss SA pageant. Investigations by the Home Affairs Department were launched, and it found that Rungo had used stolen documents belonging to a South African woman to register herself as a citizen.

Now, as part of her bail conditions, Rungo is not permitted to apply for any residency permits or visit the Mozambican or Nigerian embassies.

She is prohibited from going, or sending anyone on her behalf, to liaise with any embassy or consulate.

And until her next court appearance on 8 May, Rungo may only leave her residence on the condition that she is meeting with her legal team or for court appearances.

All the while, immigration officials have been granted the authority to conduct unannounced visits to ensure compliance with these restrictions.
