More than 216 000 people’s lives could be saved this year

Published on

More than 216 000 people’s lives could be saved this year in the Western Cape if they receive life-saving blood. This figure of 216,000 is derived from the target of the Western Cape Blood Service reaching 72,000 active donors. One unit of blood can save three lives.

“A single donation takes just 30 minutes, but regular donors help ensure that blood is always available when patients need it most,” says the Public Relations Manager at WCBS, Marike Carli.

The WCBS is also asking people to make donating blood part of their New Year’s Resolutions. This will then be, not a once-off good deed, but a regular, lifesaving habit. The Public Relations Manager at WCBS, Marike Carli, says every day, patients depend on donated blood for surgeries, cancer treatment, childbirth complications and trauma care. She says the demand never slows down.

Carli added, “Starting the year with a commitment to donate blood is more than a resolution; it’s a promise to save lives, not just once, but all year long.”

Get a limited-edition coffee plunger and mug for donating four times

She says to encourage long-term commitment, WCBS is thanking donors who donate at least 4 times in 2026 with a limited-edition coffee plunger and mug. This will serve as a small token of appreciation for a commitment that has an enormous impact.

“In 2025, WCBS collected 174,989 units of blood and welcomed 14,179 new donors, thanks to the generosity of communities across the province.”

Donate blood

Carli says, to inspire long-term commitment, WCBS has launched its 2026 Commitment Campaign as part of this month’s theme, “Share the Gift of Life.” She says the campaign encourages both new and existing donors to make blood donation a regular habit, rather than a once-off act. At the same time, a key focus this year for them will be to attract 15,500 first-time donors. These people will be essential to building a resilient blood supply for the future.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to every donor who helped save lives in 2025,” adds Carli.
