Mitchells Plain residents called to be patient amid major roadworks

The City of Cape Town is calling on Mitchells Plain residents to be patient as extensive roadworks cause major congestion in the area. The City intends an information session this month for residents and road users to get more insight into the ongoing and upcoming roadworks in the area.

The upcoming session will focus on a range of construction projects currently underway, including the road rehabilitation along Jakes Gerwel Drive and the continued construction of MyCiTi bus infrastructure on AZ Berman Drive. As part of the broader upgrades, several roads in the area are also being resurfaced to improve overall road conditions.

Councillor Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, urged local residents, business owners, and other stakeholders to attend the session to engage directly with project managers.

The session will offer detailed updates on the timing of the works, the expected disruptions, and the long-term benefits, including improved road quality and the introduction of the public transport service for the community.

“Our team understands the frustrations of these residents and empathises with the levels of congestion currently being experienced. Tackling construction work in a comprehensive, large-scale manner as we are doing in Mitchells Plain means we can complete the projects as quickly as possible, rather than stretching out the inconvenience over many years,” said Quintas.

While disruptions, such as lane closures and traffic switches, are expected in the coming months, the City has committed to ensuring that at least one lane will remain open in each direction, with works scheduled to avoid peak traffic times.

Residents will also have the chance to view project maps and traffic management plans and ask questions about the impact of the work on their daily routines.

The session will take place on Tuesday, 15 April 2025, at the Lentegeur Administrative Building on Merrydale Avenue, from 15:00 to 19:00.
