Mayco member Zahid Badroodien steps down amid disciplinary charges

Published on

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has announced that Zahid Badroodien has stepped down as Mayco for Water and Sanitation pending the outcome of a Disciplinary Committee.

In a statement, Hill-Lewis says he was informed by the Speaker’s Office that Councillor Badroodien is to face a Council disciplinary committee to answer charges relating to the alleged tampering of an electricity meter at a property owned by him.

The Mayor says this is a Council matter being dealt with by the Speaker’s Office, and he is not at liberty to comment on the charges against Badroodien, nor the disciplinary process to be followed.

Badroodien wrote to Hill-Lewis to request that he step down from his position as Mayoral Committee Member pending the finalisation of the disciplinary hearing.

Hill-Lewis accepted his request.

It is important for every member of the Mayoral Committee to be fully focused on their work.

In the interim, Siseko Mbandezi, the MayCo Member for Finance, has agreed to assume responsibility for the Water and Sanitation portfolio on the Mayoral Committee.

Hill-Lewis has expressed his confidence that Councillor Mbandezi will do an ”excellent job until such a time as Councillor Badroodien has successfully answered this case.”

“I would like to thank Councillor Badroodien for the contribution he has made to Water and Sanitation since his appointment in November 2021.

I look forward to a fair and speedy resolution of this matter, in the best interests of all Cape Town residents.”
