Police divers and other sea rescue teams are expected to continue their search for a man who disappeared at Bloubergstrand beach, in Table View, on Sunday afternoon.
The incident was reported to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) after eyewitnesses spotted a man in difficulty in the surf zone near the Dolphin Beach Hotel.
“At 13h20, Sunday, 24 August, NSRI Melkbosstrand duty crew were activated following eyewitness reports of a male appearing to be in difficulty in the surf zone at Bloubergstrand Beach, Table View, next to Dolphin Beach Hotel (in front of KFC),” said NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.
Lambinon said the City of Cape Town Water Rescue Network was immediately activated, with NSRI Melkbosstrand rescue swimmers and other rescue teams called to assist.
“WC Government Health EMS, Big Bay Surf Lifesaving, the SA Police Services, Community Medics, ER24 ambulance services, CoCT Law Enforcement and Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, responded,” Lambinon said.
He said an extensive operation included shoreline patrols, free-dive search efforts, sweeping line searches in and beyond the surf zone, and aerial drone support from the EMS Aerial Drone Rescue Unit.
But despite this, there were no signs of the missing man.
Lambinon said the unidentified man is believed to be black and was wearing shorts and a pink cap when he at the time he disappeared.
Meanwhile, the NSRI has appealed for information on the incident to be reported to Table View Police on 0215213338, SAPS on 10111, or the NSRI Emergency Operations Centre on 0870949774.
