Police in the Western Cape have confirmed they are investigating the murder of ANC ward convener and community activist, Myolisi Magibisela. The 48-year-old was gunned down outside his home in Hlanga Crescent, Makhaza, on Monday morning.
The ANC in the Dullah Omar Region has expressed deep shock at his death. Magibisela served as the ANC’s ward 96 convener and the Khayelitsha zonal chairperson of the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO). He is remembered by colleagues as a tireless community leader.
“The ANC in the Dullah Omar Region is profoundly shocked and outraged by the senseless killing of our beloved comrade. Myolisi epitomised the spirit of community activism and selfless dedication that the ANC urgently needs to drive its renewal programme,” said the ANC’s Akhona Jonginamba.
Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel Frederick van Wyk confirmed that Makhaza police have registered a murder case and launched a full investigation into the shooting.
“Circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on Monday, 2025-06-23 at about 10:50 at a premises at Hlanga Street, Makhaza. According to reports, gunshots were heard and when community members looked out they saw a white VW Jetta sped off and found the deceased shot several times,” said Van Wyk.
He was declared dead at the scene by emergency services.
The motive for the killing remains unclear, and no arrests have been made as yet.
Police have appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or to use the MySAPS mobile app anonymously.
The ANC has further called for calm among its members and urged law enforcement to ensure justice is served. Jonginamba called on government and civil society stakeholders to make a concerted effort to combat the rising violence.
He expressed his condolences, on behalf of the party, to Magibisela’s family, friends and loved ones.
“This incident highlights the urgent need for enhanced measures to protect our community leaders and activists. Violence against those who seek to uplift their communities must be addressed with the utmost seriousness,” said Jonginamba.
