Love penguins? Here’s your perfect job!

The Two Oceans Aquarium is on the hunt for a new penguin keeper to join their Curatorial Department!

 

If you love penguins, keep reading because this might just be your dream job!

 

In a job ad posted recently, the Aquarium states that the successful candidate ”will provide excellent animal care and a positive visitor experience.”

 

The Penguin Keeper works in all areas of animal husbandry including feeding, cleaning, record keeping, training and enrichment, behavioural observations, and exhibit maintenance.

 

Some of the duties and responsibilities include providing daily care and maintenance of animals, including but not limited to diet preparation, exhibit cleaning, penguin feeds and medical care.

 

In addition, you will be responsible for helping to train and oversee volunteers and interns in daily animal care, behavioral observations, and public education.

 

The lucky candidate will also perform all physical aspects of the job, including shoveling and raking, cleaning bird enclosures and general hygiene maintenance.

 

There is plenty of admin to do as well, the new penguin keeper will also have to maintain daily files and records on animals in written and digital form.

 

The candidate will also participate in Aquarium programs for the general public and interact with visitors.

 

Penguin keeper requirements

 

  • Tertiary qualification or equivalent in animal care, management or related field (advantageous)
  • Proficiency in English (oral and written)
  • Strong interpersonal skills, comfortable working with people of diverse ages and backgrounds
  • Work independently and unsupervised
  • Knowledge of MS Office, particularly Excel and Word
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Must have a sound understanding of life support design and operation, bird quarantine principles and protocols
  • Minimum of 1 years experience in an animal-related field
  • Fully flexible, all year round for weekdays, weekends, holidays and peak periods
