Two LEAP officers were arrested in Parow on Tuesday night, 13 January, on allegations that they tried to bribe a motorist.

According to the City’s Law Enforcement Department, the officers pulled over a motorist in Parow on Monday night, 5 January. The motorist was found to be under the influence of alcohol.

The motorist further could not produce a driver’s licence and was also driving an unlicensed motor vehicle.

The officers then allegedly demanded a R3,000 bribe, but he couldn’t pay immediately.

According to the Western Cape Police, the suspects took a video of the driver and saved their contacts on his cellular telephone and informed him that he could pay at a later stage.

The motorist approached the police’s anti-corruption unit, which launched an undercover operation.

The two LEAP officers were arrested during the handover of the cash last night.

They will make their first court appearance in the Belville Magistrate’s court once they have been charged.

SAPS has encouraged victims to expose corruption by coming forward so that an investigation can be initiated.

Law Enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason says this incident is incredibly disappointing.

“The City will not tolerate such behaviour, and we’ll cooperate closely with SAPS in their investigation. The officers will be served with suspension notices when they are released from custody.”
