Western Cape Police have arrested one of their own for corruption. On Friday, a police sergeant from Laingsburg was handcuffed, after he allegedly solicited a R2500 bribe from a taxi driver who attempted to evade arrest on 5 December 2023.

Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg explained what ensued: “He asked the driver to pay him R 2500 after the vehicle he was driving was circulated in a fraud case in Midrand. He negotiated with the driver and R1000 in cash was handed over to the sergeant,” said Twigg.

According to Twigg, they returned to the police station, where the driver and his passenger were released.

“The matter was reported the Anti-Corruption Unit and following a thorough investigation a well prepare case was represented to the Director of Public Prosecution who issued a warrant of arrest. The suspect is detained and will appear in the Worcester Magistrates’ court on Monday,” added Twigg.

The public is encouraged to report any corrupt activities involving SAPS members to Lt Col Jonathan Amon from the Anti-Corruption Unit on 082 301 9983 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
