Cape Town Metro Police’s K9 Unit has seized drugs worth more than R300,000 during an intelligence-driven operation in Bellville.

According to Metro Police spokesperson Superintendent Ruth Solomons, officers followed up on a tip from Crime Intelligence at around 12:30 on Saturday, 15 August, about drugs allegedly being stored at a storage facility in the area.

Officers spotted a gold-coloured Toyota believed to be driven by a suspect linked to the matter.

The 40-year-old man was pulled over and, with his consent, the vehicle was searched.

K9 Virus then detected cocaine hidden underneath the passenger seat. Officers also found tik concealed inside a fridge at the storage facility.

The operation resulted in the seizure of nearly 800 grams of tik, with an estimated street value of just under R195,000, and more than 200 grams of cocaine valued at just over R110,000.

Police also seized an electronic scale, three cellphones and R1,843.50 in cash.

The suspect was arrested and detained at Bellville SAPS for further processing.

Solomons says the successful operation highlights the important role played by the Metro Police K9 Unit in detecting and disrupting the illegal drug trade.

K9 Virus has been particularly successful in multiple drug busts.
